Twenty Questions: Lou Miranda

Welcome to our series of interviews with Barossans, this week we catch up with Lou Miranda – Owner at Lou Miranda Estate.

  1. What would you like to do if you weren’t working in the wine industry?
    Fly helicopters.
  2. What do you love most about your job and why?
    It is exciting, it is living, it changes every year, there is great diversity in the role. You go from viticultural, winemaking to maturity of wine which then accompanies food and you have friends and family around to enjoy.
  3. What was your first car?
    Holden ute.
  4. What grape variety or wine style most interests you at the moment?
    Sagrantino.
  5. What are you listening too at the moment?
    I listen to 1323 radio.
  6. What is your favourite dish to cook?
    Spaghetti napolitana.
  7. What is your idea of perfect happiness?
    Good Friday lunch with family and friends.
  8. When you’re not working what do you like to do?
    Enjoy long lunches and watch sports.
  9. What is your greatest extravagance?
    Monte Grappa pens.
  10. What are you reading at the moment?
    Bordeaux by Robert Parker.
  11. What is your favourite city/country to visit and why?
    Bassano del Grappa, Italy – the lifestyle, the history, the mountains, the art, the fast cars.
  1. What is the most memorable wine/s you have tried?
    I don’t have one, I have a few, 1991 Miranda Old Vine Shiraz, 1982 Penfolds 707, 1986 Hautbrion, 1998 Silveroak Cabernet, 1990 Gallo Cabernet.
  2. Who are your heroes in real life?
    My father Francesco Miranda, Phil Laffer from Orlandos, Richard Barret & Leon Gianneschi from Scholle Industries.
  3. What are your top 3 Barossa tips?
    Lunch at Lou Miranda Estate, Wine tasting at Peter Lehmann’s and sightseeing at Mengler Hill.
  4. What would be your chosen superpower?
    To eat and drink whatever I would like and not get gout.

    If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would you say to them?
    Lee Kuan Lew, Founding President of Signapore. How did you manage to turn Singapore around from where it was to a very successful industrial, clean, wealthy country with a great superannuation scheme, health care and education system.

  6. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you take with you?
    Water, food and my wife to cook for me.
  7. If you died and came back as a person or thing, what would it be?
    I would be happy to come back as myself, I have had a very full life.
  8. What makes the Barossa special to you?
    The people, the agriculture and the winemaking.
  9. What is your motto?
    While you live you grow.
